Top Three Sports Franchises
I know everybody loves their team. The bond between team and fan is one that is not easily shaped OR broken. Even though every team is beloved by at least somebody, unless you are the Jacksonville Jaguars and nobody wants you except for a Pakistani man who associates American football with American success, there is not a complete amount of parity among franchises. Every league has a signature franchise and a signature rivalry. Common characteristics are almost guaranteed success and a strong fan base outside of the home city. I am going to attempt to give the top three franchises from the top three professional sports leagues in America, and rate them according to relativity and importance.
Number 3: The Dallas Cowboys
The NFL is the league of parity. A new championship teams seems to rise each and every year in the NFL. It is almost impossible to go wrong with the signature franchise of the NFL. You have the behemoths such as the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Saints, Eagles, Giants, and the Cowboy’s biggest competitor, the ever unique Packers, but all these teams are not “America’s Team.” The Cowboys were successful the moment they started in the league, and it is almost impossible to remember when they were not at least relevant. Jerry Jones is the most publicly visible owner in the league, and his domineering presence is felt everywhere in the organization, in every little action. There is always a media circus surrounding the team, and its biggest personalities have never failed to entertain. The overall importance of the Cowboys gets them onto this list.
Number 2: The Los Angeles Lakers
The NBA’s “Nuclear Winter” may have shook the league, but one thing remains the same: the Lakers will be very good. The Lakers may seem like they are the lesser team in the dominant NBA rivalry between them and the Boston Celtics, but they are the more visible franchise. They own the Los Angeles sports market, have one of the most important sports superstars in Kobe Bryant, and seem to be eternally competitive. They have huge money behind their operations, and they are always detested by the rest of a league jealous of their success. They are the second best “either love them or hate them” team, only following the number team on this list. History may not back them completely, but their list of stars, titles, and celebrity fans make the Lakers the most prominent basketball brand in the world.
Number 1: The New York Yankees
This list hasn’t been a very controversial one, has it? The Yankees come in as a clear number one, head and shoulders above the competition. How many titles have they won? 30 something? Their dominance throughout the history of America’s pastime have made them symbolic of America and what the country unique. They are New York, just as famous, if not more, than the cities grand skyline. They have a massive following all over the world, especially in baseball hotbeds such as Latin America. The money behind them guarantees a competitive team year in and year out, and their history is greatest in sports. Their list of heroes is a long one, from Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle to Babe Ruth to Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, their current day stars. Their 1,000 dollars seats are proof of the demand of their fan base, allowing them skyrocket ticket prices up and still gather the same fanatic following. The Cowboys and Lakers couldn’t pull this off, although they could get close. The new Yankees stadium is not the Cowboy’s monstrosity, but it is a place of grandeur and importance, demonstrating the illustrious shine of the world’s greatest sport’s franchise.
Darth Vader is obviously a Packer Fan. Thank God.

Sarah Esteje, a photography student at the Gobelins, is the author of an amazing series of animal portraits drawn with a simple ballpoint pen. Why animals? “A nostalgia of grandma’s canvas, but also and especially because we humans are a bit all alike. Reproducing feathers, furs or scales is far more interesting!” A work of the materials, bordering on the hyper-realism by adding a softness and the original framing, the series is currently on exhibition at Point Ephémère in Paris.
